Kitty Star of the Week for April 22 - 28, 2001.
Here is Oliver's story, told by his person:
We found Oliver on Thanksgiving, 1999. We always go to my Aunt Sally's
house for big holidays. And there's always something going on, let it be a
relative jumping in the pool in the middle of winter or finding a cat to
bring home. Well, this one was big. My father and I went into the back yard
where we saw a British Red Tabby kitten approaching us bravely. He walked up
and licked my hand, love at first sight
We brought him home that night in an
old chicken crate. My other cat disapproved of him, and got all mad at us,
but they grew to be friends (he even saved Oliver from a German Shepard and a
Golden Retreiver). We found out Oliver had worms when we took him to the Vet,
that obviously wasn't all he had. They didn't check for any viruses, just for
the easy to find stuff. A couple days later he was too weak to walk, and
collapsed!
We raced him to the Vet. They said he had a deadly virus and that
it was caused by a Tick bite. They also told us he could die at any moment
because he had only 8% of his red blood cells in him, and that usually cats
die from at least 20%. He went all around to different hospitals, and we
didn't see my Mother that much because she was always with him. The scariest
night was at my band concert- the final tests would be done, and the
transfusion would occur. I hardly could blow a note, I was so scared!
He lived to be a healthy cat, and lives even to this day, about 1 1/3 years old.
